Cost to raise a child: $245,000...Cost to make memories: PRICELESS!

Lately the media has been abuzz over how much it cost to raise a child nowadays. The price tag on raising a child from infancy to young adulthood is $245,000 for middle income families, and this number DOES NOT include college tuition. Well, let me give you my thoughts on this media frenzy and statistic...So I went to undergrad and received my degree in dance. After two years out of college and a brief stint as a struggling artist, I called my Mom one night and said, "Mom, I think getting a degree in dance was a mistake." Money was funny and change was strange, folks!

After reflecting on my interests, gifts and passions, I decided to go to graduate school and study elementary education. I became a teacher and enjoyed 5 amazing years at one of the top charter schools in the country. The parents and students were amazing and I consider them extended family members. Teaching may not be a high-paying gig, but it is a steady pay check and truly rewarding.

Life has taken quite a few twists and turns since June 2013. I left my teaching job to help my church open and license a day care center. Then I went back to my old stomping ground to substitute teach and I tutored students online for a brief period of time. I started a Mommy blog as a hobby and an opportunity to do what I love - write! All the while, I was pregnant with my second child.

None of these gigs could financially compare to what I was making as a teacher. However, it became very clear for my family that placing two children under two in a day care was not financially feasible, plus this was my chance to explore my lifelong dream of being a writer. So here I am, working from home as a budding writer, in the very beginning stages of my writing career, and I would be lying to you if I said that I don't stress out over money from time to time.

As soon as I start to get distraught over our finances, all I have to do is look over at our two precious angels and the worry quickly dissipates. I hear Gianna singing one of our favorite nursery rhymes or counting to 20, or I witness her little sister lifting her head up for the first time and I am reminded that the moments we share are simply priceless.

Whether you are a working mother, stay-at-home mom or a work-from-home mama, the love, wisdom, and compassion you impart upon your children doesn't come with a price tag. There is no way one could even begin to put a price on what mothers, and fathers, have to offer their children. We are rearing the future! Whenever you are long gone, people won't remember how much money you made, much less how much it cost you to raise your children; rather they will know the kind of person you truly were through the legacy left behind in the lives of your children.

So I may be out nearly half a million dollars, but it's all good cause the love I give to and receive from my daughters makes me feel like a million bucks!!! <3
